LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Competing in their final full squad regular season meet, the Dennis Craddock Coaches Classic, the Senators set two more school records while also securing more qualifiers for the MEC Championships in two weeks.
Carter McKenna and
Anya Miller both kept their record-breaking seasons going strong, breaking the outdoor 1-mile school records. Miller ran 5:12.03 in the mile event and was closely followed by teammate
Lauren Twyman (5:13.52) for what is the second-best time in program history. McKenna's record-breaking run of 4:08.48 also converts for NCAA purposes to a 3:50.07 1500m which is the third fastest time in MEC history for the event. McKenna is ranked third in the Atlantic Region and is now just .64 away from the NCAA Provisional Qualifying time.
Other top performances from the weekend included Martin Lucas winning the 1500m (4:03) over a field of sixty competitors. Lucas also doubled back to run 1:55 in the 800 (7
th overall out of 91 competitors).
Scott Barker finished eighth overall in the event with a 4:06.
Roxanne McFarlin (58.71) finished third out of thirty-four competitors in the 400. The time is currently ranked second in the MEC.
Ella Hesson finished second overall in the 1500 (4:51) out of fifty-two competitors. Hesson also ran a strong 2:23 in the 800.
Savanna Hardman finish fifth in the 1500 (4:55).
The men's 5k group consisted of
Henry Schmidt (14:52),
Jackson Gibson (14:53),
Jan Thewes (14:53),
Gabe Conder (15:10),
Konnor Allison (15:15),
Bastian Luthmann (15:24), and
Thijs Terlouw (15:31). Seven Senators under 16:00 and three under 15:00 are both program bests for a single meet. The Senator men now have eight ranked in the Top 25 in the MEC (Top 16 make the conference meet).
In the 10k event,
Nizar Sweileh finished third overall and
Rachel Snedden finished fifth.
The majority of the Senators are now focused on hard training for the upcoming MEC Championships. A small group will compete this Friday at West Virginia University and Saturday at Alderson Broaddus still looking to achieve conference qualifying.
