FROSTBURG, Md./FAIRFAX, Va. -- The Davis & Elkins track teams had a record-breaking weekend of competitions at two separate locations.
A small group competed Saturday night in the highly-competitive George Mason Invitational; competing as the only NCAA Division II intuition (DIII Johns Hopkins was the only other non-DI) in the field of almost entirely DI competitors.
Leading the way was sophomore
Carter McKenna in the 1500m finishing seventh overall in the field of fifty-eight competitors with a school record breaking performance of 3:51.28. McKenna finished only behind runners from Rutgers, Navy, American, and George Washington University. His time is not only a school record (taking over 6-seconds off the old record, but currently ranks second in the Mountain East Conference, third in the Atlantic Region, and fortieth Nationally. The time is just 1.82 seconds from the NCAA Provisional qualifying time.
In the same heat as McKenna, the former school record holder in the 1500,
Jackson Gibson finished sixteenth overall, running under his old record with a time of 3:54.55. Gibson's time ranks fourth in the MEC and seventh in the Atlantic Region. Also competing in the 1500, freshman
Konnor Allison ran 3:59.35 (32
nd place) which makes him just the second freshman in school history to break 4:00 in the 1500. Junior,
Henry Schmidt ran near his personal best, finishing in 4:02.14 (38
th place).
In the Men's 800 at the George Mason meet, freshman Martin Lucas broke the school record running 1:54.19 to finish seventeenth overall out of fifty-seven competitors. Lucas currently sits fourth in the MEC and sixth in the Atlantic Region.
Competing the previous day at the Frostburg State meet, the Senators set two school records and had two event winners.
Gabe Conder broke the 3000m record, running 8:47.31. The event also included two other Senators finishing under the old record and in the top four.
For the women, sophomore
Ella Hesson broke her own school record in the 3k Steeplechase, running 12:25.17 for a strong second place finish.
Lauren Twyman led the Senators with the first event win of the day, running a strong 2:21.27 in the 800m. The event also included to other Senators finishing in the top four (
Anya Miller 3
rd,
Hannah Moore 4
th).
The final event winner came in the last event of the day for the Senators with senior
Kloe Littleman leading a 1-2-3 Senator sweep in the 3000m (10:57) followed by freshman
Savanna Hardman (2
nd) and freshman
Rachel Snedden (3
rd).
The Senators are back in action this week with a two-day high-quality meet at Lynchburg College on Friday and Saturday as they look to add to their MEC Championships qualifying times. It will be the last full squad meet before the Mountain East Conference Championships at Frostburg State University April 30-May 2.
