BUCKHANNON, W.Va -- Davis and Elkins swept the singles matches en route to a 6-1 win over West Virginia State in men's conference play Wednesday afternoon.
After dropping the doubles point to the Yellow Jackets to start the day down 0-1, the Senators (3-5, 1-1 MEC) rolled to straight set wins at the bottom four positions to clinch the match, before pulling out third-set tiebreakers at #1 and #2 spots.
Vinicius Azeredo and
Anthony Martins each won both their matches, and Azeredo's 6-2, 6-1 tally at #4 was the clincher that put D&E ahead for good.
Santiago Ordonez and
Filippo Buffo got the Senators started with wins at #5 and #3, before
Viktor Yanev and
Taiki Umeda completed the singles sweep.
"This was by far our best effort this spring and it came off of a solid day on Sunday at Bluefield," said coach Marc Walters. "The guys had a little adversity and we were playing a team that was very motivated, so it was great to see the guys at the bottom take care of business and get on top of their opponents early."
The Senators are back on the court Saturday in a key MEC matchup against West Liberty University in Wheeling before traveling to Ashland to face the Eagles in an intraregional battle on Sunday.
