Belle Vernon, Pa. -- The Davis & Elkins women's golf team opened their season in the Vulcan Invitational this past weekend at Cedarbrook Golf Club in Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania. With the team only able to field four players this week, the team battled and finished seventh of eleven teams.

The women's tournament was cut short due to weather. Originally scheduled for 36 holes, only 18 were completed. Sophomore Lucrezia Speranza led the team, as she did for a lot of her freshman year, with an 81 (+9).

Senior Sierra Knowlton also shot an 81 (+9), with the highlight of her round coming on the par three seventh hole. From 162 yards, Knowlton hit her seven iron and the ball came to rest in the bottom of the cup for her second career hole-in-one.

Michelle Guerra Landa had five pars and a birdie on her way to signing for an 85 (+13) and newly-appointed team captain Madelyn St-Mary rounded off the team score with a 103 (+31).

The team travels to Charleston, W.Va. for the Golden Eagle Invitational in their next outing. Round one starts on Monday, September 12 at Edgewood Golf Club.
