Senator Softball Wins Two, Drops Two at Blue Bridge Battle

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 Owensboro, Ky. – Senator softball traveled to Owensboro, Kentucky this weekend to face six new teams in the Blue Bridge Battle. Coach Fracker's team headed to Kentucky with two key starters out due to season-ending injuries.  The Senators ended up going 2-2 in the tournament.
Game One
D&E was scheduled to face the University of Illinois Springfield and Northwood University on Friday but both games were canceled due to cold weather conditions. Therefore, Slippery Rock University on Saturday was the Senator's first action of the weekend and was where they picked up their first victory of the season, by 9-7. D&E was down early, 5-1 at the bottom of the third left the team with a lot to do, but six runs in the third inning gave the Senators the lead and they would hold on to complete the victory. D&E was able to notch nine runs from just five hits and Ava Willis was at the mound for 5.2 innings, allowing just four hits and two runs in a strong pitching performance.

Game Two
Saturday evening saw a tight game between D&E and Kentucky Wesleyan, with the Senator's coming up short by a score of 3-1. D&E struggled with their hitting during game two, only managing three hits and one run from 25 at-bats. Freshman Mia Mendoza recorded two of the team's three hits, with Mia Ely scoring the only run. It looked like Kailynn Parks might have put the Panthers under pressure when she advanced to third at the top of the seventh inning, but when Alysia Huerta struck out and the late rally was cut short.

Game Three
Sunday morning saw a contest with a strong University of Indianapolis team who entered the game 9-1 on the season and ranked #7 in the Nation. The Hounds proved to be too much securing a 16-0 victory over D&E. The Senator's struggled against stellar pitching from DII Freshman of the Year pitcher Smith, notching just one hit in the game by Mia Ely. Coach Elle Fracker's team would have a short turnaround before facing Missouri S&T in the afternoon.

Game Four
In the team's final action of the weekend, they notched their second win of the weekend to head home 2-2 on the trip. D&E beat Missouri S&T in an extra-inning by a score of 14-8 Sunday afternoon. The Senators had 16 hits during the game, with seven starters notching multi-hit games and all but one starter having at least one hit. D&E trailed to the Miners 4-1 early before a massive seven runs without return in the third and fourth innings from the Senators to open a four-run lead. The Miners were able to close the gap and take the game to an eighth-inning, where D&E finished strongly scoring six runs, and when Missouri S&T was unable to come up with a response, the Senators secured their second win of the weekend.

After the weekend in Kentucky, Senator softball is 2-9 on their season.

Next weekend D&E softball is back on the road, heading to Newberry, South Carolina for the Newberry Round Robin. On Saturday March 5th, they will face Newberry College at 11am and King University at 1 pm. Followed by rematches against King University at 11 am and Newberry College in the afternoon game on Sunday.
