D&E Sweeps Concord to Close Regular Season on High Note

ATHENS, W.Va. – Davis & Elkins College softball closed its regular season with a sweep of Concord on Saturday afternoon at CU Softball Field, winning by scores of 1-0 and 5-3 to build momentum heading into the Mountain East Conference Tournament.

In the opener, Sammie Jarvis fired a three-hit shutout to lift the Senators to a 1-0 victory. Jarvis (12-11) struck out five and walked none, facing just 26 batters in a dominant performance. Gweny Wessling provided the only offense D&E needed, blasting a solo home run to right-center field in the fifth inning. Cortney Dobbs added a pair of doubles, while Davis & Elkins totaled eight hits in the win.

In game two, the Senators (27-26, 20-10 MEC) rallied from an early 3-1 deficit with a four-run sixth inning to earn a 5-3 triumph. Jules Gutierrez tied the game with a solo home run, and Lina Gutierrez delivered the go-ahead blow with a two-run double. Lorena Ruiz-Rubio chipped in with an RBI pinch-hit single to help D&E pull away.

Saylor Kneeland (13-4) tossed a complete game in the nightcap, allowing six hits and two earned runs while striking out four.

The Senators now turn their attention to the MEC Tournament, which begins Tuesday, April 30, in Salem, Va.
