Dahlonega, Ga. – The Davis & Elkins softball team traveled to Dahlonega, Georgia this weekend to face three of the nation's best teams in the Captain D's Surf N' Turf Classic.
Day One
Coach
Elle Fracker's softball team would fall to fifth-ranked North Georgia in game one 8-1. D&E struggled with their hitting in the contest managing only five hits from 28 at-bats,
Honesty Holt notched two of the team hits in the game.
Jenna Evans was at the mound for 6 innings, allowing nine hits and five runs.
Mia Ely scored D&E's lone run in the fifth inning after
Kailynn Parks singled to right field.
The Senators would have a short turnaround before facing #22 Texas A&M Commerce.
During game two, more hitting issues made life hard for D&E, as they would fall 9-1 in five innings.
Maddie Lavelle would go 2-3 at the plate and
Trinity Cossette scored D&E's only run of the game in the top of the fifth.
Emily Bowen and
Linzey Allard both made their freshman pitching debut during the game. Allard pitched two strong innings; allowing only three hits and one hit.
Putting day one behind them, D&E would face North Georgia in a rematch first on Saturday, followed by a new opponent in Florida Southern College.
Day Two
#5 North Georgia would prove to be too much again on Saturday, winning 10-2 in six innings after a strong performance. Four Senators would notch hits during the contest, with Jones and Cossette scoring the team's two runs in the top of the fifth. Grindstaff and freshman
Shelby Hile were on the mound for D&E in the first outing of the day.
In the afternoon, D&E fell to Florida Southern by a score of 11-4. The Senators managed four runs off of just six hits in the game. The highlight of the day for Fracker's team was
Linzey Allard's home run in the bottom of the third. The senior pitching partnership of
Ava Willis and
Jenna Evans was at the head of the offense against the Mocs. To conclude the weekend, D&E would face Texas A&M Commerce Sunday morning in a rematch of the contest on Friday afternoon.
Day Three
On the final day, D&E fell to #22 Texas A&M Commerce in their rematch 11-0. The contest was close until the top of the sixth inning, with the Senators being within two runs. The senior pitching trio of
Ava Willis,
Jenna Evans, and
Haley Grindstaff were on the mound for a total of 4.3 innings allowing just five hits and three runs. Kailyn Parks and
Honesty Holt notched D&E's only hits of the game.
Next up for the Senators is the Blue Bridge Battle in Owensboro, Kentucky February 25-27. They will face off against, the University of Illinois Springfield and Northwood University on day one. Followed by contests with Slippery Rock University and Rockhurst University at 2 and 4pm on Saturday the 26th. The tournament will be rounded out by games with the University of Indianapolis and Missouri S&T on Sunday the 27th before the trip back to Elkins.
