D&E Alums Celebrated During Hall of Fame Ceremony

ELKINS, W.Va. – In what was a special homecoming for some distinguished Davis & Elkins alums, the Hilda and Robert R. Butler Lobby of the McDonnell Center set the stage for D&E's Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. Five former student-athletes and the Davis & Elkins football team were honored and enshrined at the ceremony.

Davis & Elkins College President Chris Wood and Director of Athletics Patrick Snively welcomed those in attendance and bestowed the honor on the alumni student-athletes for their achievements at D&E and beyond.

The individuals inducted were Carol Kemmerle Ballay '82 (field hockey, basketball, softball), Sue Fleming '88 (softball, field hockey), Richard "Dick" Harvey '78 (baseball), Karl "Digger" Largie '79 (soccer), and George Middleton '62 (track and field).

The D&E football team, which was a part of the athletic program offerings from 1904 to 1961, was inducted as the "Spirit of D&E Football."

Honorees provided a brief acceptance speech upon receipt of their awards. George Triplett and Bill Phillips, son of the late Jim Phillips provided remarks on behalf of the football team.

Individual Hall of Fame Inductees

Carol Kemmerle Ballay

·        Four-year starter in Field Hockey

·        Scored 82 career goals

·        Captained the team that finished third in the Nation

·        South Jersey College Field Hockey Player of the Year in 1981

·        Three-year starter in basketball

·        Two-year starter in softball as team began play in her junior year

·        Member of ZTA Fraternity and President in 1981

·        Voted Miss D&E in 1981

·        Has taught pre-k through high school since 1982

·        Coached varsity Field Hockey for 15 years

·        Won New Jersey State Group I Championship in 1992

·        Named South Jersey Coach of the Year in 1992

·        Coached her three children in soccer, basketball, softball, and baseball from 1993-2012

·        Graduated Magna Cum Laude from Davis & Elkins College in 1982

Sue Fleming, Softball and Field Hockey

·        First-team All-Conference in softball 1987 & 1988

·        Member of 1987 softball team that finished 9th in the National College World Series

·        Key player on field hockey team for Coach Jean Minnick

·        Health and wellness instructor at Riverdale Country School in the Bronx

·        Creator of the Buff Fitness workout regimen, which led to reality-TV series Buff Brides.

·        Author of Buff Brides, Buff Moms-to-Be, Buff Moms, and Fashionably Buff.

·        Earned bachelor's degree from Davis & Elkins College in 1988

Richard "Dick" Harvey, Baseball

·        Four-year letterman on the baseball team, 1975-1978

·        Baseball team captain, 1978

·        Starting pitcher and infielder, 1975-1978

·        4th in ERA (2.55) in West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) - 1978

·        Batting average of .389 in 1978

·        Played key role in leading Davis and Elkins College to the WVIAC playoffs in 1978

·        Honorable mention All-WVIAC baseball team - 1975

·        Coach in the Elkins Elks Babe Ruth League for 28 years

·        President and CEO of Mountain Valley Bank, N.A. from 1991-2022

·        Earned bachelor's degrees in accounting, finance, management, and marketing from Davis & Elkins College in 1978

 

Harvey

















Karl "Digger" Largie, Men's Soccer

·        Four-year All-WVIAC team member

·        Conference Player of the Year (1976 and 1978)

·        Four-year All-NAIA member

·        First-team All-American (1976 and 1977)

·        NAIA All-Tournament team in 1977

·        Jamaican National Team member

·        Played for the Pittsburgh Spirit during the inaugural MISL season in 1978-79, scoring 12 goals and adding 10 assists in 18 games.

·        Earned bachelor's degree from Davis & Elkins College in 1979

 Largie


























George Middleton, Track and Field

·        Member of WVIAC 50th Anniversary team in Track and Field

·        Primarily a High Jumper on the Track and Field team

·        Track and Field All-American

·        Trained in the operation, maintenance, and management of radio, teletype, and cryptographic communications equipment and systems in the US Air Force

·        Went on to a career with IBM, where he worked as a Data Processing Systems Engineer and retired in 2015

·        Earned bachelor's degree from Davis & Elkins College in 1962

Plaque Inscription: Recognizing all members of the D&E football teams from 1904-1961 in collective remembrance of their remarkable success, their refusal to accept defeat and their unquestionable contribution to the enjoyment of the game and a brotherhood that has continued for a lifetime and beyond.
