YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO - The Davis & Elkins track teams had a record breaking weekend at the 20+ team YSU Collegiate Invitational this past Friday in Youngstown, Ohio.
Starting off the meet with not only a school record but also with an event win was freshman Leon Steinkrug who broke the previous 800m record running 1:56.66 to take the invitational title. Leon is ranked second in both in the MEC and Atlantic Region.
The second record to fall came in the last event of the day when freshman Carter McKenna broke the 3000m record with a blazing 8:26.39 which is the top time in the MEC and Atlantic region to go along with a top 35 time in all of NCAA D2 currently. This makes back to back weekends that the 3000m record has been broken as recent transfer to D&E, Sophmore Henry Schmidt had just broke it the previous meet at the Marietta Open.
Henry Schmidt this week competed in the Mile event where he finished 2nd overall in 4:18.8 which is the second fastest time in program history and is currently ranked second in both the MEC and Atlantic Region.
Other highlights from the meet:
Jackson Gibson 1:59.91 800 and 4:23.5 in the mile, both program top 5 indoor times.
Scott Barker, 4:25.61 in the mile
Anya Miler, Madi Michels, and Zoe Van Dijk running 5:25, 5:29, and 5:31 respectively in the women's mile.
Ella Hesson and Anya Miller both running strong races doubling back in the women's 800.
Following McKenna's record run was a strong pack under the 9:00 barrier in the 3000m with Thijs Terlouw (8:47) and Nizar Sweileh (8:54).
On the sprint side, Ben Banda opened up his 2022 season with a 22.8 200m and Roxanne McFarlin moved up to second on the MEC performance list with a 60.58.
