D&E - UC Set for Nationally-Ranked Match-up

ELKINS, W.Va. – The Davis and Elkins men's soccer team has garnered some National attention of late and for good reason. The Senators, who currently rank third in the most recent United Soccer Coaches poll are riding a 13-0-1 record into the latter part of their season with a showdown with perennial Mountain East Conference (MEC) Champion and reigning National Champion (2019), the University of Charleston looming.

The Senators have shown marked improvement since head coach Dean Johnson's arrival. Following an 8-9 record in 2019, Johnson orchestrated a 7-2 turnaround in an untraditional Spring, 2021 season shortened by the COVID-19 pandemic. Davis and Elkins then fell in the semifinals of the MEC playoffs to Notre Dame College 2-1.

Undefeated in their first fourteen matches this fall, the Senators have only given up goals in four matches and are also 10-0-1 in the MEC. Senior goalkeeper, Jeremy Coste ranks first in the country in shutouts with ten and first in goals against average with only .346 per game.

Charleston ranks sixth nationally and is the Senators' Wednesday evening opponent. The Golden Eagles sport a 13-1 record (12-1 in the MEC). Charleston's lone loss on the season was to Davis and Elkins in mid-September. It was Charleston's first regular-season conference loss since October 12, 2016.

Both teams are high-powered offensively. Charleston ranks second in the country in scoring offense with 3.57 goals per game and 10.57 points per game, while Davis and Elkins ranks fourth with 9.14 points per game and fifth with 3.14 goals per game. MEC rival and the only team the Senators were unable to beat this season (game ended in a 2-2 tie), Notre Dame College ranks first nationally in scoring offense with 3.83 goals per game and first in points per game with 11.00.

The match with Charleston is set for Wednesday, October 27 at 7pm on Nuttall Field on the campus of Davis and Elkins College.
