ELKINS, W. Va. -- On a cold, rainy afternoon in Elkins, the No. 3 seed Davis & Elkins College men's soccer team secured a spot in the Mountain East Conference semifinals with a 3-1 victory over No. 6 seed West Virginia Wesleyan College at Nuttall Field.
The Senators took an early lead when forward Johan Magaña scored in the 11th minute, assisted by Shemar Daley. West Virginia Wesleyan responded shortly after with a goal by Chiedozie Ozo-Undeze in the 15th minute, leveling the score at 1-1. Despite a red card issued to Davis & Elkins' Kendall Pellot in the first half, the Senators maintained their composure.
Senior forward Dominique Castano scored early in the second half, giving the Senators a 2-1 advantage, and Magaña sealed the win with his second goal of the game in the 63rd minute, assisted by Castano.
Reflecting on the game, D&E head coach Meir Lewin stated, "That was a really difficult, really typical playoff game. I don't think it was our best soccer of the season or our most aesthetically pleasing soccer of the season. But ultimately the guys did what we needed to do to get it over the line. And I'm really proud of the effort. Really appreciate our opponents all season. We're moving forward and now we're just gonna try to get healthy and rested and recovered to try to get a result on Wednesday."
Castano, a senior, expressed his gratitude to supporters, saying, "Thank you, everyone who showed up to the game. It was a big fight for us. I'm happy for the whole team, cause everyone who is stepping on the field is performing and that's all we needed, and we're happy. And on to the next, go Senators!"
