CHARLESTON, W.Va -
The Senators Tennis teams closed out GMAC play over the weekend against Tiffin and Findlay. Both matches had to be moved from Elkins indoors due to inclement weather.
D&E opened with Tiffin on Friday at Ridgeview Racquet Club in Morgantown. Both teams fell by a 4-0 score.
Laura Vargas continued her strong play, as she was tied 3-3 in the second set at #2 singles when the match was stopped.
On the Men's side, the Senators came close in doubles, but were points away from wins at the top two lines.
Andrew Shand and
Alvaro Legoinha fell 7-5 at the top spot, and
Obert Matthew Mulyadi and
Alejandro Meseguer dropped a 6-4 decision at #2.
In singles play,
Alvaro Legoinha was up 5-3 in the second set when the match was stopped after dropping the first set.
Andrew Shand and
Alejandro Meseguer fell in identical 6-3, 6-3 decisions.
On Saturday against Findlay, the Senators came even closer, but couldn't pick up any wins in 5-0 losses. The match was played at Charleston's Tennis Indoor Center.
Valentine Schwartz rallied in the second set, but came up just short in a 6-1, 6-4 loss at #4 singles.
Taylour Newman battled in the second set of a 6-0, 6-3 loss at #1.
For the men,
Andrew Shand and
Alvaro Legoinha held two match points against the nation's #46 ranked doubles team at #1, but would ultimately fall in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-4).
Andrew Shand would carry over the effort into singles, taking the first set at #2 singles, but coming up just short, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Cordel Bostic fought hard at #4 singles in a 6-2, 6-4 loss.
Obert Matthew Mulyadi lost 6-3, 6-3 at #1 singles to Tomas Kmetko, who is undefeated in conference play.
The Senators will finish their season with matches against West Virginia Wesleyan. The Women host the Bobcats today at 4:00 PM, while the Men will go to Buckhannon tomorrow for a 4:00 PM start.
