The Davis & Elkins College Senators Men's Tennis team fell short of the upset of regionally-ranked Charleston on Wednesday afternoon at the Kanawha Community Center in Charleston.
The Golden Eagles, ranked #4 in the Atlantic Region by the ITA, secured the doubles point with a tight victory at #1 doubles, following a quick win at #3 doubles.
Obert Matthew Mulyadi and
Alejandro Meseguer capitalized on aggressive play in a 6-3 win at #2 doubles.
Andrew Shand and
Alvaro Legoinha were broken late in their match at #1 doubles, falling 6-4 to give UC the doubles point.
The Golden Eagles had quick wins at #5 and #6 singles to put the match closely in their favor.
Alejandro Meseguer played well in his match at #2 singles, but his opponent outmatched him in a straight set win to clinch in favor of UC.
Andrew Shand rallied from a first set deficit, channeling strong net play and clutch shots to come back and win 4-6, 6-3, 10-5 at #3 singles.
Obert Matthew Mulyadi hung very tough with Alek Gracin, ranked #13 in the Atlantic Region at #1 singles. In a tight second set, Gracin was able to hold off Mulyadi and win 6-3, 7-6 (3).
Alvaro Legoinha rode out an early lead and brought the level in the third set tiebreaker for a strong win 6-4, 2-6, 10-4 at #4 singles.
The Senators will close out conference play with matches this weekend against Tiffin and Findlay. Play will be at 1:00 PM against Tiffin at Ridgeview Racquet Club in Morgantown.
