The Davis & Elkins College Men's Tennis team played a very difficult stretch of matches during their spring break trip to Florida.
The Senators opened play against Florida Tech, falling 6-1 in a competitive match in Satellite Beach, Florida.
Andrew Shand picked up the only point for the Senators, with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-0 win at #3 singles. Shand also teamed with
Alvaro Legoinha for a 6-3 win at #2 doubles.
Alejandro Meseguer fell 6-4, 7-5 in a tight match at #2 singles.
The Senators were rained out on Tuesday against Florida Southern, but made up the match the following day, falling 6-1 to the Mocs.
Alejandro Meseguer picked up an impressive win at #2 singles, defeating Victor Ahlback 6-4, 3-6, 10-7.
Andrew Shand lost 6-4, 6-4 at #3 singles, while
Cordel Bostic fell 6-4, 6-3 at #5 singles.
Against Eckerd, the Senators struggled in a 7-0 defeat.
Alvaro Legoinha and
Andrew Shand won their second doubles match of the week, defeating Alasdair Knox and PK Patel in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-4).
Knox defeated
Obert Matthew Mulyadi 6-3, 6-3 at #1 singles, and
Cordel Bostic had his second competitive 6-4, 6-3 result of the week.
Against NAIA opponent Southeastern University, the shorthanded Senators lost 7-2, playing a different format due to the NAIA host.
Andrew Shand and
Alvaro Legoinha played up a spot in the lineup, picking up strong singles wins against a difficult Fire team. Shand broke serve down 6-5 in the first set in a 17-deuce game, lasting nearly a half hour, to win the first set 7-6 (7-3) in nearly two hours, and would close out the match 6-3 in the second set.
Alvaro Legoinha rallied after a slow start to win 1-6, 6-3, 10-6. Shand and Legoinha would fall to the Fire 9-8 (8-6) in a tiebreaker at #2 doubles.
In the final match of the trip, the Senators took on #18 Embry-Riddle in Daytona Beach on Saturday, but the Eagles won 7-0.
Alejandro Meseguer played the closest singles match against the nationally-ranked Eagles, falling 6-3, 6-2 at #2 singles.
The #1 doubles team of Mulyadi and Meseguer led the match 5-2, but were unable to close out the Eagles' top doubles team, falling in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-1).
The Senators will return to action on Wednesday, March 20th, as they will play host to Fairmont State. First serve is set for 3 PM at the Thomas Tennis Center.
