PREVIEW: Wheeling Poses Next Test for D&E

THE OPENING TIP
Davis & Elkins looks to get back on track after a second half comeback effort came up short last time out against Frostburg State. The Senators are set to welcome one of the biggest surprise teams of the MEC this season in Wheeling, currently second in the league standings. With both sides suffering narrow losses in their last game, Wednesday night will prove to be a perfect chance to get back in the win column in an important early-season matchup at the McDonnell Center.

AROUND THE LEAGUE
DAVIS & ELKINS NOTES
  • A combined 40 points from Donte Doleman and Erkam Kiris weren't enough as the Senators battled back from a 16-point second half deficit to Frostburg State, ultimately dropping the league tilt in the closing moments of regulation by a 76-74 tally.
  • Davis & Elkins is third in the league in field goal percentage defense, holding opponents to under 45% shooting from the floor. For context, nine of 12 MEC schools are allowing opponents to shot 45% or higher this season.
  • Terrance Lakes has made a difference at both ends of the floor this season, averaging 7.3 points/game and swiping a team-best 11 steals. Lakes and Kyle Leslie were both a +6 for Davis & Elkins last time out against the Bobcats.
  • Doleman and Teemu Tumanoff have each made double digit three pointers this season for the Senators, who are shooting 36.9% from beyond the arc as a team.
  • Wednesday marks the opening contest of a three-game homestand to begin the month of December. The competition will be tough, as two of the next three games are against the top two teams in the MEC standings.

SCOUTING WHEELING
  • Much like Davis & Elkins, Wheeling is also coming off a narrow loss in its last game against Tiffin. A three pointer with five seconds left in regulation snapped the Cardinals winning streak on November 30.
  • Wheeling is fifth in the nation in scoring defense, surrendering just 59.5 points/game. The Cardinals have held four of their six opponents to 60 points or less.
  • At 17.2 points/game, sophomore F Emmanuel Armstrong (8.2 RPG) is ninth in the MEC in scoring average.
  • Head coach Will Ryan is in his first season and has the Cardinals playing an exciting brand of basketball. The team was picked last in the MEC Preseason Poll and enters Wednesday in second place in the league.
  • Jordan Reid (16.2 PPG, 5.2 RPG), Jay Gentry (13.3 PPG, 4.3 RPG) and Jarrett Haines (11.8 PPG, 2.7 RPG) have also been catalysts for the Cardinals this season.
