John Coakley Joins Men's Basketball Staff as Assistant Coach

ELKINS, W.Va. – Davis & Elkins College head men's basketball coach Daniel Harris has announced the addition of John Coakley to the Senators' coaching staff. Coakley joined the program in May 2025 following a successful three-year stint as the lead assistant at Point Park University in Pittsburgh, Pa.

During his tenure at Point Park, Coakley helped guide the program to an impressive 64-29 overall record. The 2023-24 season marked a historic run for the Pioneers, who finished 30-3 and captured their first regular season and conference tournament titles in 17 years, along with the program's first NAIA national tournament win in 23 years.

In his first year at Point Park, Coakley helped engineer a remarkable turnaround, improving the team's win total by 13 games from the previous season with a 23-8 record in 2022-23.

Among his key recruits at PPU was standout Jo Valrie, who earned NAIA All-America honors, as well as Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year accolades. Valrie was also recognized as a Bevo Francis Top 50 Player before transferring to NCAA Division I SIU-Edwardsville.

Prior to his time at Point Park, Coakley served as the lead assistant at his alma mater, Huston-Tillotson University, an NAIA HBCU now competing in the HBCU Athletic Conference. During his time at HT, he coached two players who went on to play professionally overseas.

Coakley also gained NCAA Division I experience as a graduate assistant at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, a member of the Southland Conference. Under head coach Willis Wilson, he handled a variety of duties including video breakdown with Sportscode Elite, Synergy video exchange, film sessions, player development, academic monitoring, and oversight of team managers.

A native of Houston, Texas, Coakley played collegiate basketball at Huston-Tillotson and earned his bachelor's degree in kinesiology in 2019. He completed his master's degree in kinesiology from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in 2021.
