Senators Fall to No. 1 West Liberty, 84-74, in MEC Quarterfinals

WHEELING, W.Va. — Eighth-seeded Davis & Elkins saw its season come to an end Friday evening, falling to top-seeded West Liberty, 84-74, in the quarterfinals of the Mountain East Conference Men's Basketball Tournament at WesBanco Arena.

The Senators battled throughout against the nationally ranked Hilltoppers, holding a brief lead midway through the second half before West Liberty used a late run to pull away.

Matthew Gray led Davis & Elkins with 18 points, adding five rebounds and four assists. Nnadozie Okoroji finished with 16 points and five rebounds, while Vegas Evans added 12 points and five boards. Darrius Roach chipped in 10 points and four assists.

West Liberty held a narrow 42-38 advantage at halftime after a tightly contested first half that featured five ties and multiple lead changes. Davis & Elkins closed the opening period on a 9-2 run, highlighted by a three-pointer from Gray that cut the deficit to three before the Hilltoppers scored in the final seconds to extend their lead.

The Senators came out strong in the second half, taking their first lead of the period at 43-42 on a basket from Evans with 18:55 remaining. The teams traded baskets throughout the next several minutes, with D&E building a 67-65 advantage after a Roach three-pointer with just over eight minutes left.

West Liberty responded with a decisive stretch down the final minutes, capitalizing on turnovers and second-chance opportunities to regain control. The Hilltoppers finished with a 48-37 advantage on the glass and scored 26 points off turnovers to secure the victory.

Jamie Muldowney led West Liberty with 19 points and nine rebounds, while Myles Montgomery added 15 points. Peter Lattos contributed 14 points and nine boards for the Hilltoppers.

Malachi Hampton grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds for Davis & Elkins, helping the Senators remain competitive on the interior.

The loss concludes the 2025-26 season for Davis & Elkins, which finished 10-20 overall and 6-13 in Mountain East Conference play.
