Box Score FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The Davis & Elkins College Men's Tennis team started off its match-play season on Tuesday by defeating Fairmont State 4-3 in a non-conference match.
The Senators (1-0) split with host Fairmont (0-1) in the singles matches, which was played first in the event, before concluding with doubles.
With doubles split 1-1, the double point and the match came down to the final game on the court, as
Andrew Shand and
Alvaro Legoinha battled to a 6-4 victory over Joao Martins and Drew Hawthorne to give the Senators the victory.
Samuel Bowman and
Cody Turner also picked up a 6-4 double victory in the No. 3 match just prior to that, defeating Ryan Leo and Deiland Slaughter.
In singles play, Fairmont State took the first three matches, winning at the No. 1, 2 and 3 matches. However, the Senators fought off elimination and started their comeback with Bowman's win over Leo at the No. 5 match, as Bowman won 6-1, 6-0.
Shortly after that, Turner narrowed the gap to just one point with another 6-1, 6-0 victory for the Senators, this time at the No. 6 match over Slaughter.
Legoinha then tied the match and kept the Senators alive with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at the No. 4 match over Hawthorne.
The Senators will return to action on October 5, as Davis & Elkins take part in the first of three straight days of Tournament play in the I-79 Quad, which begins in Buckhannon.
