WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Davis & Elkins College baseball team put together a late push but could not overcome an early deficit, falling 3-2 to Tiffin University at the RussMatt Invitational on Tuesday (Mar. 4).
The Dragons (7-3) struck early with a three-run first inning, capitalizing on a hit-by-pitch, a passed ball, and timely singles.
D&E (1-6) responded in the fifth inning, cutting the deficit to one run. Kyle Thomas was hit by a pitch and advanced on an error, setting up Joseph De La Nuez, who delivered an RBI single to shortstop. Zach Calef-Boring followed with a run-scoring ground ball to bring home De La Nuez, but the Senators could not push across the tying run.
On the mound, Diego Reyes (0-1) took the loss for Davis & Elkins, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out six over four innings. The bullpen held strong, with Cooper Blackburn tossing three scoreless innings and Ethan Marshall adding a shutout frame to keep the Senators within striking distance.
