ELKINS, W.Va. — March 29, 2025 — Despite a pair of competitive performances and a combined 22 hits on the day, the Davis & Elkins baseball team dropped both games of a Mountain East Conference doubleheader to visiting Fairmont State on Saturday at Harpertown Field. The Falcons took Game 1, 8-7, and used a five-run eighth inning to complete the sweep with a 7-5 victory in Game 2.
Game 1: Fairmont State 8, Davis & Elkins 7
The Senators (3-20, 2-6 MEC) looked poised to snap their skid in the opener after building a 7-4 lead through four innings. D&E plated four runs in the bottom of the fourth and held the advantage until the Falcons chipped away, scoring two in the sixth and two more in the seventh to rally for the win.
Freshman Joseph De La Nuez sparked the offense, going 1-for-2 with two RBIs, three runs scored, and three stolen bases. Larry Kusan and Mason Brenneman each drove in two runs, while Zach Calef-Boring tripled and scored.
On the mound, Ethan Marshall started and worked 5.1 innings, giving up four earned runs on eight hits while striking out three. Dylan Miller and Bryce Hines combined for one inning of scoreless relief, and Isaac Lane (0-6) was charged with the loss after allowing two runs in 0.2 innings. Kyle Ball recorded the final out.
Game 2: Fairmont State 7, Davis & Elkins 5
In the nightcap, D&E once again held the upper hand late, but a five-run eighth inning from Fairmont State proved to be the difference.
The Senators jumped out with single runs in the first and second innings and later made a push with a three-run eighth, but the comeback came up short.
Right fielder Larry Kusan led the charge at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance that included two doubles and three RBIs. Cort Kegley also tallied three hits, while catcher Noah Hanna added a 2-for-4 day with an RBI. D&E collected 15 hits in total, its highest single-game output of the season.
Diego Reyes gave the Senators a quality start, going 7.0 innings and allowing just one earned run on seven hits while striking out one. Bryce Hines was charged with three runs in relief, and Malakai Webb (0-1) took the loss after allowing two runs in the eighth.
