Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Wheeling

WHEELING, W.Va. — Davis & Elkins College split a chilly Mountain East Conference doubleheader at Wheeling on Saturday, falling 1-0 in a tightly contested opener before bouncing back with an 11-2 offensive explosion in Game 2. The Senators got a complete-game effort from Isaac Lane in the first matchup and followed with a 12-hit outburst in the nightcap, highlighted by standout performances from Joseph De la Nuez and Larry Kusan.

Game 1: Wheeling 1, Davis & Elkins 0
In a pitchers' duel on a cold afternoon at JB Chambers I-470 Complex, Davis & Elkins came up just short in the opener, falling 1-0 to Wheeling on Saturday.

Sophomore right-hander Isaac Lane turned in a strong performance for the Senators, tossing a complete game. He allowed just two hits and one earned run over six innings, striking out three and walking two. Despite the effort, Lane was saddled with the loss, dropping to 0-5 on the season.

The Senators were held to two hits and did not advance a runner past second base, as Wheeling's pitching and defense combined to keep D&E off the scoreboard.

Game 2: Davis & Elkins 11, Wheeling 2
Davis & Elkins bounced back in the second game, using a late offensive surge to earn an 11-2 win and salvage a doubleheader split.

The Senators exploded for four runs in both the sixth and seventh innings, pulling away after entering the sixth with a slim 3-2 lead. D&E finished with 12 hits, led by Joseph De la Nuez and Larry Kusan, who each went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. De la Nuez added a double and two stolen bases, while Kusan also collected a double and swiped two bags.

Sophomore Cooper Blackburn picked up his first win of the season, improving to 1-5. He threw five scoreless innings, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out two. Malakai Webb and Bryce Hines combined to pitch the final two innings, with Hines recording the final four outs without allowing a baserunner.

With the win, Davis & Elkins improved to 3-18 on the season and 2-4 in Mountain East Conference play.
