ELKINS, W.Va. — The Davis & Elkins College baseball team came up short in both games of a doubleheader against Point Park University on Saturday at Harpertown Field. The Senators battled but ultimately fell 13-2 in the opener and 13-2 in the nightcap.
Game 1: Point Park 13, D&E 2
Point Park (11-5) took control early, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. The Pioneers continued their offensive surge, adding three runs in the third and two in both the fifth and sixth innings. They capped their scoring with a pair of runs in the seventh.
D&E (1-13) answered with single runs in the second and fourth innings. In the second, Mason Brenneman reached on a leadoff single and later scored on Larry Kusan's RBI triple. Grant Mealey came around to score in the fourth after drawing a walk and advancing on a base hit by Xavier Perry.
On the mound, Isaac Lane (0-3) took the loss, giving up seven runs (six earned) on four hits in two innings, walking four and striking out one. Malakai Webb followed in relief, tossing three innings while allowing four runs (three earned) on three hits, striking out one. Brycen Sechler finished the game for the Senators, surrendering two runs on seven hits over two innings.
Game 2: Point Park 13, D&E 2
The Senators fell in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, suffering a 13-2 loss.
D&E (1-14) struck first in the bottom of the first inning when Zach Calef-Boring led off with a triple and later scored on a groundout by Mason Brenneman. However, the Pioneers (12-5) responded emphatically, plating four runs in the third inning to seize control.
Point Park extended its lead with three runs in the fourth. The Pioneers added four more in the sixth before tacking on two final runs in the seventh.
Davis & Elkins' second and final run came in the seventh when Jett Walters delivered an RBI single to drive in Cort Kegley, who had led off with a double.
Kegley finished 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored, while Walters and Brenneman each recorded an RBI. Calef-Boring's first-inning triple was one of the few offensive highlights for the Senators.
Diego Reyes (0-2) took the loss, allowing four runs (two earned) on one hit over 2.2 innings while walking five and striking out four. Dylan Miller entered in relief, giving up two earned runs on one hit and a hit batter in 0.1 innings. Chase George followed, surrendering five earned runs on three hits across 2.2 innings, walking three. Carson Gorby pitched one inning, allowing two earned runs on two hits with one walk. Joe Ginn closed out the game, tossing 0.1 innings and allowing two hits but no runs while striking out one.
