MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Davis & Elkins College baseball team was held scoreless in a 6-0 loss to California University of Pennsylvania on Tuesday night at the Mylan Park Sports Complex.
The Senators (1-10) managed just four hits in the contest, unable to break through against a dominant California (PA) pitching staff that tossed a complete-game shutout. The Vulcans (9-2) capitalized on key scoring opportunities, pushing across runs in four different innings.
California (PA) opened the scoring with a two-run second inning and tacked on single runs in the fifth and sixth before adding two more in the seventh. The Vulcans finished with eight hits while taking advantage of two D&E errors.
Grant Mealey provided the only extra-base hit for the Senators, a double in the fifth inning, while Mason Brenneman, Larry Kusan, and Kyle Thomas each added singles.
On the mound, Davis & Elkins used eight different pitchers throughout the game. Ethan Marshall got the start and worked a scoreless first inning, allowing no hits and recording two groundouts. Cooper Blackburn took over in the second inning and allowed two unearned runs on no hits with one walk in his one inning of work. Isaac Lane followed in the third and tossed a scoreless inning, giving up one hit while striking out two. Malakai Webb worked the fourth inning and also kept the Vulcans off the board, surrendering two hits but escaping without damage.
Dylan Miller took the mound in the fifth and allowed one run on two hits with one strikeout. Joe Ginn pitched the sixth, giving up one run on one hit while striking out two. Kyle Ball struggled in the seventh, allowing two runs on two hits with a wild pitch. Diego Reyes closed out the game for the Senators, tossing a scoreless eighth inning while striking out two.
