ELKINS, W. Va. -- The Davis & Elkins College women's basketball team fell short against West Virginia State University in a spirited contest at McDonnell Center on Wednesday night. The Senators showed some resilience but ultimately lost 80-67 in their latest MEC matchup.
Freshman guard Sophia Toscano led D&E with an impressive season and career-high 22 points, connecting on 8 of 12 field goals and 5 of 6 free throws, while also recording four steals in a breakout performance. Kylie Morris contributed 12 points and six rebounds, demonstrating her strong inside presence. Jahniya Marion added 11 points, showcasing her scoring ability despite a tough defense. Rebecca Kaba made an impact on the boards with eight rebounds, adding eight points to her tally.
D&E started strong in the first quarter, scoring 17 points, but a slow second quarter saw them trailing by halftime. Despite a strong fourth-quarter rally with 23 points, the Senators couldn't close the gap created by West Virginia State's dominant second quarter, where the visitors scored 29 points.
West Virginia State capitalized on turnovers, scoring 23 points off D&E's mistakes. D&E's bench added 53 points, showing depth in their roster but falling short in critical moments.
