GLENVILLE, W.Va. — Despite a hard-fought battle, the Davis & Elkins Senators fell 1-0 to Glenville State on Wednesday night at I.L. & Sue Morris Stadium. The Senators showed strong defensive determination, keeping Glenville State scoreless in the second half while tallying eight total shots.
D&E's senior goalkeeper Monica Birkelund was a standout, making eight saves, including seven in a relentless second half as Glenville State applied pressure. Birkelund's efforts kept the Senators within striking distance throughout the match.
The Senators managed five shots in the second half and had two on target, with redshirt senior forward Alexa Karsel and sophomore midfielder Taytum Walls forcing saves from Glenville's goalkeeper. Despite the Pioneers' early goal by Valentina Quiroz in the 11th minute, Davis & Elkins continued to push forward, nearly equalizing several times.
The D&E defense held firm despite the Pioneers' 18 total shots, forcing the opposition into difficult shooting angles and preventing any further damage.
Though the result did not go their way, the Senators will take heart from a strong overall performance as they look to build momentum heading into their next match.
