Senators Fall to Frostburg State 71-83

FROSTBURG, Md. — The Davis & Elkins College women's basketball team opened its Mountain East Conference play on the road Saturday, falling to Frostburg State, 83-71, at Bobcat Arena.

Despite a strong offensive start, the Senators (0-5, 0-1 MEC) were unable to contain a balanced attack from the Bobcats (4-2, 1-0 MEC). D&E led 23-18 after the first quarter, fueled by a hot shooting start that included five three-pointers.

A trio of freshmen led the offense for the Senators, forward Kylie Morris paced the Senators with 16 points, shooting 7-of-11 from the field, and added five rebounds. Jocelyn Gagnon chipped in 12 points, all coming from beyond the arc, and grabbed six boards. Jahniya Marion also scored 12 points while leading the team with eight rebounds.

Frostburg State's Emilee Weakley - last season's MEC Player of the Year - was dominant throughout, tallying a game-high 28 points on 12-of-20 shooting and pulling down three rebounds. The Bobcats utilized their physicality in the paint, outscoring the Senators 52-26 in the lane.

The Senators struggled to maintain their defensive edge in the second and third quarters, where Frostburg State outscored D&E 20-15 and 23-13, respectively. Davis & Elkins made a late push in the fourth quarter, scoring 20 points, but the deficit proved too large to overcome.

D&E finished the game shooting 37.9% from the field (25-of-66) and converted 10 of their 26 attempts from three-point range. The Senators showed promise with 17 assists on their 25 made baskets but were hampered by 14 turnovers and foul trouble, committing 25 personal fouls.

Frostburg State shot an efficient 53.6% from the field (30-of-56) and took advantage of their opportunities at the free-throw line, making 20 of 25 attempts.
