Women's Soccer Falls Short Against Wheeling

ELKINS, W. Va. -- The Davis & Elkins College women's soccer team suffered a 2-1 defeat against Wheeling University on Sunday at Nuttall Field. Despite a spirited second-half performance, the Senators were unable to complete the comeback.

Wheeling opened the scoring early in the 15th minute when Mary DiFonzo found the back of the net, followed by Nyah Smith adding another goal just three minutes later to put the Cardinals ahead 2-0 by the 18th minute. D&E senior goalkeeper Monica Birkelund made crucial saves throughout the first half to keep the scoreline from widening, including a stop in the 22nd minute.

The Senators came out strong in the second half, with Alexa Karsel scoring in the 64th minute to bring the home team back into the game. Karsel's goal was a result of sustained pressure and an assist by Frederique Morin. The Senators pressed hard for an equalizer, recording seven shots in the second half, including a notable attempt from Rylie Galterio that was saved by Wheeling's Olivia Kqira.

Despite their best efforts, Davis & Elkins couldn't find the back of the net again, and Wheeling held on for the win. Birkelund finished the game with three saves, while Kqira made six saves to secure the victory for Wheeling.

The loss drops the Senators to 0-8-1 overall and 0-6-1 in Mountain East Conference play, while Wheeling improves to 3-6-0, 2-4-0 in conference action.
