ELKINS, W. Va. -- In a tense and physical contest at Nuttall Field on Sunday, the Davis & Elkins College men's soccer team earned a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Wheeling University. The match, marked by aggressive play and a flurry of yellow cards, especially in the second half, saw both teams battle intensely for every ball.
Wheeling opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when Josh Timbrell netted the game's first goal, putting the Cardinals ahead 1-0. The Senators applied pressure throughout the first half, recording several chances, but struggled to break through Wheeling's defense, with Johan Magaña and Modou Faye both firing shots wide.
The second half saw the game turn chippy, with a total of seven yellow cards being handed out, including a red card to D&E freshman Santiago Maiolo in the 66th minute, leaving the Senators to play the final stretch with 10 men. Despite the disadvantage, D&E found the equalizer in the 77th minute when Hugo Fauli calmly slotted a shot past Wheeling's goalkeeper on a free kick following a penalty.
Wheeling's Carlos Molina made six saves to keep the game close, while Davis & Elkins' Dante Ordones had one key save in the first half and a huge save near the end of the second half. The Senators, now 4-3-2 on the season, will look to build on this result as they continue Mountain East Conference play.
