PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- In a hard-fought contest at Highmark Stadium, Davis & Elkins College women's soccer came up just short, falling 2-1 to Point Park University on Wednesday night.
The Senators (0-7-1, 0-5-1) mounted a strong second-half comeback after going down 1-0 in the 34th minute. Rylie Galterio found the back of the net for Davis & Elkins in the 53rd minute, leveling the score at 1-1 and marking her first goal of the season.
However, Point Park regained the lead in the 78th minute, when Paula Sole scored off an assist from Sterre Kuijper, putting the Pioneers ahead 2-1.
D&E nearly tied the game in dramatic fashion in the 84th minute. A clean drive down the length of the field, with crisp passing, set up Kristia Kouppi, who leaked behind the last defender. Kouppi's pass to Alexa Karsel left Karsel with a clear shot at goal, but her effort went just wide of the right post, narrowly missing the equalizer.
The Senators outshot Point Park 13-6, with six shots on target. Goalie Monica Birkelund made one save in the match. Despite the loss, Davis & Elkins displayed resilience and nearly grabbed a point on the road.
