ELKINS, W. Va. -- The Davis & Elkins College women's soccer team fell 4-2 to West Liberty (3-7-2, 2-5-2 MEC) on Wednesday night at Nuttall Field. Despite the weather, which remained damp and chilly throughout, both teams fought hard.
West Liberty opened the scoring in the 10th minute, but D&E responded quickly with a goal from senior Alexa Karsel in the 12th minute. The Senators took a 2-1 lead early in the second half when senior Rebecca McClenahan scored the go-ahead goal, her first of the season, assisted by Karsel.
However, West Liberty rallied with three unanswered goals in a seven minute span in the second half. WLU equalized in the 66th minute, then went ahead in the 71st minute. The Hilltoppers capped off the scoring rally in the 73rd minute.
Despite a valiant effort by Davis & Elkins, including four saves from goalkeeper Monica Birkelund, the Senators were unable to overcome the offensive surge from West Liberty. The loss drops D&E to 1-10-1 (0-8-1 MEC) on the season.
