ELKINS, W.Va. -- At the end of regulation in Wednesday night's men's soccer showdown between Mountain East Conference foes Davis & Elkins and Notre Dame, the game was knotted in a tie, much like it was the last time the two played.
When they last met in the MEC Tournament semifinals, the two played to a 2-2 tie, but the game was decided by shootout and Notre Dame moved on to the finals. Both teams moved on to the NCAA Tournament and both teams fell to Franklin Pierce.
This time around, in a defensive battle, neither team found the back of the net and the game ended in a 0-0 tie. Games no longer go to overtime and shootouts in the regular season.
For D&E, the tie was a victory of sorts. Following a 4-0 loss to West Liberty in the first game of the season, head coach
Meir Lewin was looking for his team to rebound. Notre Dame entered the game as the #15 team in the country in the United Soccer Coaches poll having beaten #4 Lake Erie 3-0 and Ohio Dominican 3-1.
D&E limited the Falcons to just seven shots and two shots on goal. In its previous two games, Notre Dame averaged fifteen shots, eight shots on goal, and three goals. In contrast, the Senators got off nine shots, but only two on goal.
Up next
D&E plays next at Concord. The Mountain Lions are 1-0-1 on the season. The road contest is set for 3:30pm on Sunday, September 10 at Paul Cline Sports Complex in Beckley, W.Va.
