ELKINS, W.Va. – Davis & Elkins baseball played a four-game homestand over Monday and Tuesday and won three of four games, winning one of two against Frostburg State on Monday and earning a Tuesday sweep of Fairmont State.
D&E vs. Frostburg, Game One
Davis & Elkins watched the first game slip away early and couldn't recover in a 5-2 loss to Frostburg State on Monday. Frostburg scored on a home run and a single in the second inning.
Jake Garrett was on the mound for D&E. Garrett surrendered five runs on nine hits over five innings, striking out two and walking one.
Brycen Sechler and
Carlos Texeira entered the game from the bullpen, each throwing an inning.
Jake Spearen led Davis & Elkins College with two hits in three at bats.
D&E vs. Frostburg, Game Two
D&E defeated Frostburg State 3-1 in the second game of the doubleheader Monday after taking the lead late in the game. The game was tied at one with D&E batting in the bottom of the fifth when
Cort Kegley singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run.
The pitching was strong on both sides. Wes Athey struck out three, while Frostburg State pitchers sat down four.
Frostburg State opened scoring in the first inning on a one-run single.
The Senators knotted the game up at one in the bottom of the third inning, when an error scored a run for D&E.
Athey earned the win for D&E. The lefty lasted seven innings, allowing six hits and one run while striking out three.
Jack Maruskin took the loss for Frostburg State. The pitcher allowed zero hits and two runs over four innings, striking out three and walking zero.
Alex Amodeo, Kegley,
Fletcher Hindman, and
Connor Hyde all had one hit to lead Davis & Elkins.
D&E vs. Fairmont, Game One
Matthew Colon shut down Fairmont State, throwing a complete game shutout and leading Davis & Elkins to a 4-0 victory on Tuesday.
D&E got things moving in the second inning, when
Jake Spearen singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run.
Colon was on the mound for Davis & Elkins. The lefthander allowed three hits and zero runs over six and two-thirds innings, striking out three and walking one.
D&E racked up seven hits in the game.
Cole Hitch and Spearen each collected two. The Senators didn't commit a single error in the field.
D&E vs. Fairmont, Game Two
Davis & Elkins scored five runs in the second inning of game two on its way to an 8-1 victory over Fairmont State on Tuesday. Hindman,
Larry Kusan, and Hyde each drove in runs during the inning.
Spearen led the Davis & Elkins to victory on the hill. Spearen lasted five and two-thirds innings, allowing six hits and one run while striking out three.
Malakai Webb threw one and one-third innings in relief out of the bullpen.
The Senators had 13 hits in the game.
Aydin Zimmerman, Hyde,
Gavin Hartman, and Kusan each managed multiple hits for Davis & Elkins College. Zimmerman went 4-for-4 at the plate to lead Davis & Elkins in hits.
