ELKINS, W.Va. – Ripe from their first win of the season, the Senators put together a sweep of the visiting Alderson Broaddus Battlers to earn a three-game win streak.
Game One:
Both squads stranded base runners through the first four innings.
The Battlers were first on the board with a single run in the top of the fifth inning, a run that was left unanswered until the bottom of the sixth.
The bottom of the sixth was the turnaround that the Senators needed to take back the lead.
Larry Kusan grounded out, but freshman
Aydin Zimmerman sent the ball into left field on a base hit single.
Connor Hyde, another freshman, followed suit hitting another single into right field and advancing
Aydin Zimmerman to third. Senior,
Cole Hitch, stepped up to the plate with two runners on base with a 1-0 deficit and provided the perfect touch to bring Zimmerman home and leave Hyde on second.
Lucas Myford was up next and hit a single to center field allowing Hyde to make his way home, giving D&E the lead at the end of the sixth inning.
For the first time in conference play on the season, the Senators found themselves defending a lead instead of chasing one. They held the Battlers scoreless in the seventh and held on to win 2-1.
Jake Spearen picked up the win for the Senators.
Game Two:
Alderson Broaddus was on the board in the first inning and Davis & Elkins found themselves once again trailing an opponent when the Battlers scored twice in the second inning and led 3-0.
D&E battled back in the bottom of the second when Wes Athey reached first on an error.
Jake Spearen singled to advance Athey to second.
Fletcher Hindman then hit an RBI single to score Athey. The momentum stalled on a third out, but D&E closed the gap 3-1.
D&E was able to string together four runs in the fourth inning.
Zach Owens was walked to first, then advanced to second by
Jake Spearen.
Fletcher Hindman then singled, advancing Spearen to second and Owens to third. When
Dezmon Johnson reached on a fielder's choice, Hindman advanced to second, Spearen to third, and Owens scored.
Larry Kusan then delivered with a bases loaded single that scored Spearen. Hindman later scored on a double play ball and Johnson scored when
Connor Hyde singled.
D&E held the Battlers scoreless through the final three innings to earn the 5-3 victory and their third in a row.
