D&E Women Fall in MEC Opener

ELKINS, W.Va. -- Davis & Elkins jumped out to an early lead in its Mountain East Conference Women's Basketball opener Saturday afternoon, but fell 74-71 to the visiting Bobcats of Frostburg State.

D&E ran out to an 11-2 advantage just six minutes into the contest and held a 15-10 edge at the end of the first quarter. Frostburg inched closer throughout the second quarter, tying the game on a three pointer with :50 in the half. A jumper in the paint put the Bobcats up two as time ran out in the first half, 30-28.

In the second half, the roles reversed. Frostburg State led by as many as ten points late in the third period and D&E found themselves chipping away at the lead.

Down seven with under three minutes to play, Alexis Smith went on a short run to pull the game within reach. Smith hit a circus layup while getting fouled, but missed the free throw. She was then fouled with under two minutes remaining and made both free throws to pull within three, 71-68. Fouled again, Smith made one of two again to pull within two.

A Bobcat turnover led to a Kaylee Milburn layup that tied the game 71-71 with 1:05 remaining.

Frostburg made two trips to the free throw line and made three of four foul shots to go up 74-71 and that was how the game ended.

Taylor Smith led D&E with 19 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 steals. She went 4 for 9 from the field, including 4 of 9 from beyond the arc.

Marissa Berlin added a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Alexis Smith also scored in double figures with 12 points. She added a game-high 5 assists.

Kaylee Milburn added 8 points and 5 rebounds.

Up next:
Davis & Elkins plays host to Fairmont State on Tuesday at 2pm inside the McDonnell Center. The Falcons are 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the MEC. The game with be the first game of a doubleheader with Fairmont State.
