ELKINS, W.Va. – The Davis & Elkins College baseball team celebrated senior day at Harpertown Field with two wins over rival West Virginia Wesleyan College. The Senators took game one 2-0, then overcame a four-run deficit in game two to take a 6-5 win in eight innings.
Game One
Chase DeGrood put D&E on the board in the bottom of the third, hitting a double to left field to score
Fletcher Hindman. DeGrood would single to right field in the bottom of the fifth to knock in
Larry Kusan. That would be all the scoring for game one.
Jake Spearen earned his first college victory on the mound. Spearen pitched six shutout innings scattering four hits, striking out three, and issuing no walks.
Justin Wisniewski came in to pitch the seventh and earned the save.
DeGrood led the Senators at the plate going 2-3 with two RBIs.
Zachary Higgins, Hindman, and Kusan each had one hit.
Game Two
The Bobcats jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the second inning taking advantage of a couple fielding miscues by D&E. The Senators would get three runs back in the bottom of the fourth.
Kamien Gonzalez singled to left field scoring
Zachary Higgins and
Luis Diaz, Wes Athey would advance to third on the play. Athey would then cross the plate on a passed ball. To make the score 4-3 after four complete innings.
Cole Hitch tied the game in the bottom of the fifth, hitting a single to left field to score DeGrood. Later in the inning Higgins doubled to left field to score Hitch and put D&E on top 5-4. West Virginia Wesleyan would battle back and tie the game in the top of the seventh inning and keep the Senators in check in the bottom half of the inning to force extra innings. In the bottom of the eighth inning DeGrood would come through once more, hitting a walk off single to left center to score
Kamien Gonzalez and give Davis & Elkins the win.
DeGrood went 3-5 at the plate with an RBI and a run a scored. Gonzalez was 2-4 with two RBIs. Higgins went 2-3 with an RBI followed by Hitch 2-4, one RBI.
Luis Diaz drew three walks, had one hit, and scored a run. Athey and Hindman each added a hit.
McKinley Scott was solid on the mound. Scott gave up zero earned runs and had 11 strikeouts.
Gunnar Bettenhausen earned the win pitching a scoreless eighth inning, striking out two.
The two teams will meet again Sunday in Buckhannon. Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00pm.
