BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The Davis & Elkins College baseball team ended their season with two exciting extra inning victories over West Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday. D&E took game one 4-2 in eight innings. The Senators erupted for nine runs in the top of the ninth in game two to take a 15-6 win.
Game One
D&E got on the board first in game one. Wes Athey drew a walk to start the top of the fifth inning. Athey moved over to second on a wild pitch.
Fletcher Hindman then drove in Athey on a single to center field. The Senators would add a run in the top of the sixth.
Cole Hitch doubled to left field, just missing on a home run as the ball hit near the top of the fence.
Luis Diaz launched a double to left field to score Hitch and make it 2-0. The Bobcats got on the board in the bottom half of the inning and the score was 2-1 after six complete innings. The Senators went down in order in the top half of the seventh and Wesleyan took advantage of a fielding miscue to force extra innings. DeGrood and Diaz drew walks to start the eighth inning, they then advanced to second and third base on a wild pitch.
Zachary Higgins then came up in a big way, smacking a single to left field to score two.
Gunnar Bettenhausen was able to keep Wesleyan off the board in the bottom half of the inning to give the Senators the win.
Senior pitcher
Justin Wisniewski was fabulous on the mound. Wisniewski pitched seven innings, scattering five hits, striking out five, and giving up just one earned run. Higgins went 1-3 with two RBIs. Diaz and Hindman each had a hit and an RBI. Athey, Hitch, and
Anthony Laney registered a hit.
Game Two
West Virginia Wesleyan got on the board first in game two, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Davis & Elkins would score in the top of the second as Athey singled to start the inning and was brought in on a triple by
Kamien Gonzalez. The Bobcats added a run in the bottom half of the inning and led 3-1 after two complete innings. In the top of the third the Senators had two singles and Diaz was hit by a pitch. D&E took advantage of two wild pitches to score two runs. Athey added a third on a sacrifice fly to right field to put the Senators on top 4-3. Wesleyan was held scoreless in the bottom of the third.
Justin Dadig got Davis & Elkins started in the top of the fourth doubling to left field. Hindman then bunted him over to third. DeGrood would then bring him home on single just by the shortstop. The score would stay 5-3 until the top of the sixth. Hindman and Laney both singled to get the inning started, Hindman later scored on a wild pitch. Wesleyan would get the run back in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 6-4. D&E couldn't get anything going in the seventh and the Bobcats got two in the bottom of the inning to again force extra innings. The eighth inning went scoreless. The Senators then erupted for nine runs in the top of the ninth. D&E had five hits in the inning, drew two walks, and had one batter hit by a pitch. Davis & Elkins also took advantage of two Bobcat errors in the inning. Wesleyan couldn't get anything going in the bottom of the ninth and the Senators would leave Buckhannon with sweeping the twin bill and sweeping the four-game series.
DeGrood went 4-4 at the plate with an RBI. Laney had three hits and an RBI. Athey, Dadig, Gonzalez, and Higgins each had two hits. Athey and Gonzalez had two RBIs, Higgins added one. Diaz and Hindman each had one hit. Bettenhausen pitched two scoreless innings.
