ELKINS, W.Va. – The Davis & Elkins College baseball team split the first two games of a four-game series with Glenville State Monday afternoon at Harpertown Field.
Cole Hitch hit a walk off single in game one to give the Senators and exciting 3-2 victory. Elkins, West Virginia native Adam Riggleman earned the victory in game two for the Pioneers.
Game One
The Pioneers led 2-0 after four and a half innings.
Luis Diaz would knock
Cole Hitch in on a single to left field in the bottom of the fourth to cut the deficit to one. In the bottom half of the sixth inning
Chase DeGrood would score on a
Mason Brenneman sacrifice fly to make the score 2-2 after six complete innings.
Gunnar Bettenhausen would keep the Pioneers off the board in the top of the seventh. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh
Cole Hitch would hit bloop single into shallow right field to
Anthony Laney and seal the victory for D&E.
Hitch went 2-4 with an RBI and one run scored. Diaz was 1-2 with an RBI. Brenneman added an RBI.
Austin Beattie,
Wesley Athey, Laney, and
Zachary Higgins all collected hits.
Zachary McGillan pitched six solid innings giving up two runs on seven hits, with two strike outs and one walk.
Game Two
The Senators jumped out to an early 2-0 after one complete inning. GSU would score runs in the second, third, fourth, sixth, and seventh innings on there way to an 11-3 win.
Brenneman went 2-3 with one run scored. Beattie and Hitch each had a hit.
Davis & Elkins is now 6-20 overall and 3-11 in the Mountain East Conference.
Glenville is 19-9 and 7-7 in the MEC.
The two teams will play the final two games of the series tomorrow at Harpertown Field. First pitch is schedule for 1pm.
