Tim Miller's Davis & Elkins College baseball team played host to the West Liberty Hilltoppers today at Frank Loria Memorial Park in Nutter Fort, West Virginia.
Cole Hitch hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the 6
th inning to put the Senators ahead and Zac McGillan secured the 3-2 win by going the distance on the mound in game one. In game two, the D&E rally fell short and the Hilltoppers escaped with a 10-7 win.
GAME ONE
Davis & Elkins finished with three runs on six hits.
Chase DeGrood,
Wesley Athey, Hitch,
Kamien Gonzalez,
Zachary Higgins, and
Avante Neal all had one hit for the Senators. Hitch led the team with two runs batted in.
McGillan pitched seven strong innings, giving up two earned runs on seven hits. McGillan had nine strikeouts and issued no free passes.
GAME TWO
West Liberty jumped out to an 8-0 lead after three complete innings. The Senators scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut into the Hilltopper lead. In the bottom of the 5
th,
Luis Diaz hit a pinch hit three-run homer down the left field line to cut the West Liberty lead to just two (9-7). WLU would add an insurance run in the top of the sixth.
Davis & Elkins finished with seven runs on nine hits. Diaz had three runs batted in on his loan at bat of game two. Hitch went 2-3 and scored twice.
Larry Kusan was 2-4 with two runs batted in. Kusan also scored once.
Flecther Hindman,
Anthony Laney, and DeGrood each added one hit.
Jake Spearen,
Carlos Texeira, and DeGrood combined to pitch 4 2/3 innings of relief, giving up one run.
D&E is 4-14 overall and 1-5 in the Mountain East Conference on the season.
West Liberty is 2-17 overall and 2-4 in the MEC.
