INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The Davis & Elkins College women's basketball team visited West Virginia State University Wednesday night for a Mountain East Conference contest. The Yellow Jackets were hot from three, connecting on 17 three-point field goals. D&E led at the half, but a strong third quarter by State was too much to overcome. WVSU won the game 92-70.
WVSU led 30-22 after a quarter of play. The Yellow Jackets increased their lead to 10 (40-30) with 5:19 left in the half.
Karlie Denham capped off a 16-2 run to end the half hitting a three at the buzzer, Davis & Elkins led 46-42 at the break. West Virginia State exploded for 37 points in the third quarter and led 79-61 heading into the final quarter. WVSU would outscore D&E the final frame 13-9.
Peyton Mohler continued her strong play. Mohler paced the Senators with 28 points and 10 rebounds.
Allie Taylor scored 18 points and pulled down eight rebounds.
Marissa Berlin had another double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
West Virginia State was led by Ashley Davis. Davis had 22 points followed by Charity Shears 20.
With the loss the Senators fall to 6-16 overall and 3-14 in MEC play.
State improves to 16-5 overall and 12-4 in the league.
D&E returns to the McDonnell Center this Saturday hosting the University of Charleston. Tip-off is slated for 2:00pm.
