ELKINS, W.Va. – Coach
Rachel Swartz and her Davis & Elkins College women's basketball team knew what they had to do to qualify for next weeks Mountain East Conference tournament, win their last two games and hope for a Frostburg loss on Saturday. They did the first part of that task tonight, beating Frostburg State 80-57.
The Senators jumped out to an early 13-4 lead on a
Dream Cherry three with 5:50 left in the first quarter forcing the Bobcats to call a timeout. The timeout didn't slow the D&E attack, as they outscored Frostburg 32-14 in the first quarter. Davis & Elkins would extend their lead to 22 (38-16) with 7:46 remaining in the second quarter. Frostburg State would battle back ending the half on a 15-3 run to cut the lead to 10 (41-31) at the break. In the third quarter the Bobcats would get to within six points. D&E would stop the bleeding and led by 16 heading into the fourth quarter. The Davis & Elkins lead would grow to as much as 27 in the final quarter, before settling for the 23 point victory on senior night.
Marissa Berlin and Cherry each had 24 points for the Senators. Berlin also grabbed 16 rebounds.
Allie Taylor knocked down four three-point field goals on her way to a 14-point performance.
Peyton Mohler added nine points followed by
Amiah Banks eight.
The Bobcats were led by Arianna Briggs-Hall. Briggs-Hall had 12 points followed by Rhiana Hall nine.
With the win D&E improves to 7-19 overall and 4-17 in the MEC.
Frostburg drops to 5-22 overall and 4-17 in the league.
The Senators close out the regular season Saturday at West Virginia Wesleyan. Tip-off is slated for 2:00pm.
