Women's Basketball Hangs On, Defeats Wesleyan, Earns Trip to MEC Tournament

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – Coach Rachel Swartz and her Senator basketball team made the short trip to West Virginia Wesleyan Saturday afternoon.  Going in to the game D&E knew what needed to happen in order for them to qualify for next weeks Mountain East Conference tournament.  First, they needed to take care of their own business and they did that by defeating the Bobcats 65-53.  Secondly, they needed Fairmont State to defeat Frostburg State.  Fairmont won 103-70.

Davis & Elkins started the game on a 15-0 run.  Wesleyan responded and ended the quarter on a 16-4 run to trail by just three (19-16) after a period of play.  D&E would outscore the Bobcats 13-11 in the second quarter and led 32-27 at the break.  The Senators would extend their lead to 13 (54-41) at the end of the third quarter.  Wesleyan would cut the lead to seven, but could get no closer.

Peyton Mohler led the Senators.  Mohler had 30 points, six rebounds, and five assists.  Marissa Berlin produced a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds.  Dream Cherry added 12 points followed by Allie Taylor six.

Courtney Wilfong paced the Bobcats with 16 points followed by Daveona Hatchell 15.

D&E improves to 8-19 overall and 5-17 in the MEC.

Wesleyan finished the season 3-22 overall and 1-21 in the league.

The Senators earned the 10th seed in the MEC tournament and will play seventh seeded West Virginia State in Wheeling on Wednesday at 12:00pm inside WesBanco Arena.
