Elkins, W.Va. – Rachel Swartz's Davis & Elkins women's basketball team finished strong to overcome West Virginia Wesleyan 67-57 Saturday afternoon in Mountain East Conference action.
The Senators trailed 20-14 after a quarter of play and 32-25 at the break. D&E opened the third quarter on a 12-2 run to take the lead 37-34. The two teams would trade baskets the rest of the quarter with Wesleyan leading 50-49 to start the fourth. D&E would outscore the Bobcats 18-7 in the final quarter and held Wesleyan scoreless the final 5:16.
Davis & Elkins was led by Dream Cherry's career high 28 points. Cherry connected on four three pointers and was 6-7 from the free throw line. Marissa Berlin battled hard in the paint, scoring 14 points and snatching 19 rebounds. Allie Taylor and Peyton Mohler each had nine points. Taylor also had eight rebounds.
Cierra Tolbert led the Bobcats with 19 points and seven rebounds, Courtney Wilfong had 10 points.
The Senators move to 4-11 overall and 1-9 in the MEC.
Wesleyan falls to 2-10 and 1-9 in the conference.
D&E will travel to Charleston on Monday night to face the Golden Eagles. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30pm.
