ELKINS, W.Va. — Davis & Elkins baseball took one game in the four-game set with Concord, picking up a 9-5 triumph in the opening game of the doubleheader at a sun-soaked Anderson Field on Monday.
Luis Diaz notched four hits on the day in the first game for Davis & Elkins (7-17), including a double and home run to go along with three RBI.
Troy McMillion added a pair of knocks for the Senators in game one, while
Zachary McGillan picked up the victory on the mound with six strong innings of work.
THE RUNDOWN: GAME ONE

HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME ONE
- After a leadoff walk to Alex Castaneda, Cole Hitch smacked a one-out single through the left side to place runners at the corners. Chase DeGrood legged out a fielder's choice as Castaneda scored on a throwing error for a 1-0 lead.
- Looking to manufacture some offense, DeGrood took off for second, later moving to third on an errant throw as Hitch scored for a 2-0 edge. With two down, T. McMillion drove home a run, pulling the ball through the left side and pushing D&E ahead 3-0 in the first.
- Concord chipped away with single runs coming in the first and second, slicing the deficit to 3-2. The Mountain Lions plated their runs on a fielder's choice and a groundout, scoring on two balls that did not leave the infield.
- Davis & Elkins answered back in a big way with five runs in the fourth. Max Larimore led off the frame with a single back up the middle, moving to third on a double from Ryan Savitt. Diaz cleared the bases by clobbering an 0-1 pitch to left, the first home run of his career, widening the D&E lead to 6-2.
- The Senators weren't done in the fifth as Christian Ortega cracked a ground-rule double, chasing the Concord starter Eddie Blake. With a runner in scoring position, CU relief pitcher Dan Nicholls recorded consecutive outs, the second of which scored Ortega from third.
- Najay King earned a walk, moving to second on a wild pitch before scoring on a two-out single from T. McMillion for an 8-2 cushion.
- The Senators tacked on one more run in the sixth, coming off a King groundout. CU posted three runs over the final two innings, but could not dent the deficit beyond 9-5.

HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME TWO
- Concord put the second game away early, leading 12-0 after two and 17-0 after five.
- Zachary Higgins got the Senators on the board with a fifth-inning RBI triple before the Mountain Lions responded with two more runs in the sixth.
- With both teams working in reserves, the Senators pushed across five runs in the seventh, highlighted by a three-run home run for Christian Ortega.
NEWS AND NOTES
- McGillan pushed his record to 4-1 on the season, collecting his fifth start of the season spanning at least six innings.
- Diaz worked his way back into the lineup during the Concord series, posting his first career four-hit game in the opening contest on Monday.
- D&E needed five pitchers to navigate through game two, all tossing 25 pitches or more.
