ELKINS, W.Va. -- Davis & Elkins baseball earned a 9-6 victory in game two Sunday to highlight a doubleheader with 19th-ranked Charleston (W.Va.) at Harpertown Field.
Davis & Elkins (6-14) dropped the series with an 11-2 loss in game one before bouncing back in the next contest. Charleston (24-4) had its 15-game winning streak snapped in the second game.
Game One
In what was a theme throughout the series, UC jumped ahead early, posting a 4-0 edge after two innings.
Chase DeGrood got the Senators on the board with a solo home run, his first of the season, in the third inning.
UC expanded its lead to 8-1 after five before
Zachary Higgins grounded out and plated
Christian Ortega, who pushed his hitting streak to 10 games.
Zachary McGillan battled through four innings on the mound before Hank Shutz came on for the final three in relief.
Game Two
The Senators plated five runs in the fourth to take a 5-1 lead in game two.
Jeremy Torres delivered the first run of the second game with a single through the left side in the fourth, later added a run-scoring single in the fifth. Torres had just five plate appearances entering the day, making his first start in the field this season after working primarily as a pitcher.
McKinley Scott logged 4.2 innings, navigating the potent Golden Eagles lineup, while allowing four hits and three runs with three strikeouts.
Carlos Vizcaya entered in relief for the final 2.1 innings, picking up the save to close out the victory.
DeGrood walked with the bases loaded following the Torres fourth-inning single for the 2-1 advantage.
Cole Hitch found a gap through the left side of the infield, pushing across a run from
Max Larimore for a 3-1 lead.
Najay King later reached on a dropped third strike with two runs crossing home to cap the big inning for the Senators, who jumped ahead 5-1. The Golden Eagles got two runs back in the top of the fifth before the Senators countered back with two runs in response during the home half for a 7-3 edge.
The Golden Eagles notched three more runs in the sixth, climbing to within one run at 7-6. The Senators manufactured two more runs in the sixth to claim the 9-6 triumph.
