ELKINS, W.Va. – Ninth-ranked Davis & Elkins men's soccer emerged with a 3-2 overtime victory after a game-winner from
Gianluca Fiorini during a physical matchup with Alderson Broaddus on Sunday night at Nuttall Field.
Davis & Elkins (6-1) jumped ahead to a 2-0 lead before Alderson Broaddus responded with a pair of goals to tie things in the 75th minute. The Senators held a 26-12 edge in shots and a 12-3 margin in shots on goal.
Daniel Cerezo settled the ball in the air and launched one to the right side of the net for a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute.
Christian Carranza added his first goal of the season, finishing a
David Jara pass in the 49th minute for a 2-0 advantage.
AB pressed forward after scoring its first goal and eventually finished to tie the score.
Fiorini worked free in the middle to bury a pass from
Yavi Ortiz for the game-winning tally.
Cerezo had one of his six shots in the third minute before AB tested
Jeremy Coste for his lone save of the evening in the eighth minute.
David Jara had an attempt saved along the turf by AB keeper Diego Gomez before
Matteo Ghezzi entered the game for the returning
Yaya Dosso to provide D&E with another offensive spark. Jara assisted on a goal from Carranza in the 49th minute as D&E struck early in the second half, before ringing a penalty kick attempt off the crossbar just over one minute later.
An attempt from Cerezo glazed the right post in the 53rd minute as AB capitalized with a goal from Melvrik Fernandes in the 55th minute, slicing the D&E lead to just 2-1. With a renewed energy, the Battlers picked up the pace in search of the equalizer, sending two shots off target in the next two minutes.
The Senators countered back with a few chances of their own in the 68th and 69th minute before Jara was shown a red card in the 71st minute. Tanner Kidwell headed a ball into the left side of the goal in the 75th minute, knotting the score at two.
Ortiz and Ghezzi had attempts in the waning moments of regulation but could not capitalize as the chippy affair went to overtime. The Senators peppered Gomez with attempts in the first seven minutes of the overtime session with shots from
Anderson Marroquin, Cerezo and Fiorini gobbled up by the AB keeper.
Fiorini eventually fired home the game winner, gathering in the middle and finishing as D&E closed out the contest.
