Baseball Downed in Saturday Doubleheader at Glenville State

GLENVILLE, W.Va. — Davis & Elkins baseball fell in both ends of a Saturday doubleheader to Glenville State, dropping game one 13-7 before falling 17-6 in the nightcap.

Davis & Elkins falls to 4-10 while Glenville State moves to 12-7.

Game One
Davis & Elkins had plenty of traffic on the base paths early, racking up four runs during its first trip to the plate. With two on, a wild pitch pushed John Arcaro and Alex Castaneda to second and third.

Christian Ortega whacked a single that kept carrying off the wall in left center for a 2-0 lead, moving to second on the throw. Later in the frame, Najay King dropped a double down the right field line, scoring Ortega and Cole Hitch for a quick 4-0 edge.

Glenville State responded with three runs in the second, aided by some defensive miscues from D&E to trim the deficit to 4-3. GSC added the tying run in the third with a hard-hit single through the left side.

The Pioneers continued applying the pressure offensively with a grand slam in the fourth to surge ahead 8-4. The long ball continued to fuel the GSC bats as the Pioneers moved ahead 12-4 in the fifth.

The Senators posted three runs in the seventh, including another two-RBI double for King, to account for the final 13-7 margin.

Max Larimore and Jeremy Torres logged three innings each on the mound. King had two hits and four RBI and Ortega added two knocks and three RBI.

Game Two
Hitch cracked one up the middle to score Castaneda, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the game, for the early 1-0 lead in the first. Ortega continued his strong day at the dish with a hard-hit double to second, moving Hitch to third before he crossed home on a King groundout.

The Pioneers worked a patient approach in the bottom of the first, plating four runs following four walks and three hits to lead 4-2.

Hitch led off the third with a homer to straightaway center, trimming the GSC lead to 4-3. Arcaro smacked a ball hard to center two batters later, but a diving grab ended the frame to keep the Pioneers in front at 4-3. Another home run for the Pioneers, this time by Matthew Mangum, pushed the hosts in front 6-3 in the third. GSC kept racking up the runs for a 13-3 advantage.

Hitch crossed home on a fourth inning single from Josh Sherman that was misplayed in right, allowing the extra 90 feet to make it a 14-4 game. The Pioneers ballooned the lead to 17-4 before the Senators pushed across two more in the seventh.

Hitch and Ortega had three hits each for the Senators. Jason Perdue and Rory Burke closed out the final three innings for the Senators.
