Similar Script for Senators in Loss to Wheeling

WHEELING, W.Va. – Davis & Elkins did not go quietly, rallying in the seventh inning in both ends of a doubleheader in a pair of 5-4 walk-off defeats to Wheeling on Monday.

Davis & Elkins (2-6) needed to score several runs in the seventh inning of both games to extend things before Wheeling (11-4, 7-1 MEC) closed things out in walk-off fashion.

GAME ONE – Wheeling 5, Davis & Elkins 4
Davis & Elkins notched three runs in its final trip to the plate, extending the contest with the score tied at four, only to see Wheeling capture the game one win in walk-off fashion for a 5-4 final. Jacob Murray converted with a bases-loaded single to secure the victory for the Cardinals.

The Senators surrendered three runs in the bottom of the first and fell behind 4-0 through two innings. D&E plated their first run in the top of the third, coming off a Chase DeGrood single to left center that scored Josh Sherman.

While the D&E offense had minimal production throughout the day, John Arcaro and DeGrood drew consecutive walks with one down in the top of the seventh. Christian Ortega reached on a single to right and Cole Hitch delivered with the bases loaded, working the count full before lacing a run-scoring single that made it 4-2.

Wheeling pitcher Albert Baez responded with a strikeout for the second out of the seventh, but a wild pitch and single from Troy McMillion knotted things at four. Wheeling placed its leadoff runner on in the home half of the seventh, moving to second on a passed ball and to third on a wild pitch with nobody out. After issuing a walk, Carlos Vizcaya sent down Luis Domingez on three pitches for before an intentional walk loaded the bases for Murray.

Kade Kozak logged five innings as the D&E starter on the mound, tossing 88 pitches and allowing four runs (two earned) with five walks and four strikeouts. Carlos Texeira delivered one inning of scoreless relief.

GAME TWO – Wheeling 5, Davis & Elkins 4
Davis & Elkins jumped ahead 2-0 off a Wheeling fielding error in the second as Najay King and Hitch raced home. Wheeling responded with a single run in the second and two more in the fifth for a 3-2 lead.

Another Wheeling error plated the game-tying run for the Senators in the seventh before Ortega scored Arcaro, who has reached base in all eight games this season, with a single to right for a 4-3 edge. The Cardinals pushed across two runs in the bottom of the seventh to secure the sweep.

Alex Castaneda and Hitch posted two knocks each in game two, while Zachary McGillan had another strong outing on the mound. McGillan fired six complete innings, allowing eight hits but just three earned runs with three strikeouts.

Justin Wisniewski and McKinley Scott finished the game out of the bullpen for D&E.
