WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – Davis & Elkins baseball responded with a game two rally in a doubleheader split with West Liberty on Saturday afternoon.
Davis & Elkins (2-4) was playing in its first road action of the season, while West Liberty (6-7) was making its home debut.
GAME ONE – West Liberty 4, Davis & Elkins 0
Davis & Elkins could not crack WLU hurler Juston Pennybacker, who fired a two-hit complete game shutout for the Hilltoppers.
John Arcaro and
Troy McMillion posted a knock each for the Senators, while
Max Larimore gutted out 5.1 innings on the mound with seven strikeouts.
WLU plated its first run courtesy of a D&E passed ball for a 1-0 lead. The Hilltoppers doubled the lead in the sixth after a D&E error as part of a three-run sixth inning.
Larimore scattered seven hits before
Carlos Texeira entered for the final two outs.
GAME TWO – Davis & Elkins 3, West Liberty 2
The Hilltoppers carried a 2-0 shutout into the sixth until the Senators pushed across three two-out runs to grab the lead back.
On the mound,
Jeremy Torres,
Rory Burke and
Carlos Vizcaya combined to allow just two hits and keep the Hilltoppers off the scoreboard over the last five innings. Torres was strong in five innings of work, allowing just four hits and two earned runs with four strikeouts.
Burke and Vizcaya held WLU without a hit over the final two innings, providing the D&E offense the opportunity it needed.
John Arcaro singled home
Ryan Savitt in the sixth for the Senators first run.
Luis Diaz cracked a double, plating Arcaro and
Cole Hitch for the 3-2 edge.
Five different Senators collected a hit in the victory.
