ELKINS, W.Va. – Davis & Elkins baseball opened the 2021 season at home, falling in both ends of a doubleheader to visiting Fairmont State on Saturday at Harpertown Field. The Senators had the go-ahead run at the plate in the seventh during a 10-7 loss in game one before surrendering a big first inning in a 13-3 setback in the nightcap.
Davis & Elkins (0-2) trailed most of the day as Fairmont State (4-6) combined for 10 runs in the first inning of the afternoon slate, including nine in the second game.
Christian Ortega hit .571 on the day, posting four knocks and three RBI with a double.
Miles Williams,
Chase DeGrood,
Zachary Higgins and
Ryan Savitt also added multiple hits in the doubleheader for D&E.
Carlos Texeira tossed four innings of relief in game two for D&E, which surrendered 23 runs to the Fighting Falcons in the two games.
Game One
Fairmont State got on the board first before
Christian Ortega scored
Alex Castaneda with a single in the home half of the first. The Fighting Falcons added three more runs in the top of the second for a 4-1 advantage.
A sacrifice fly from Castaneda in the fourth trimmed the deficit to 5-3 after
Zachary Higgins crossed home. DeGrood followed it up with a run-scoring single, plating
Andre Ramirez as D&E clawed back to within one at 5-4.
Fairmont posted four runs in the fifth to pull away at 9-4. Zach Musgrove cranked a homer to left for a 10-6 advantage in the seventh. D&E plated one run in the final half of the seventh and sent the go-ahead run to the plate, but could not complete the comeback in the first contest.
Max Larimore started on the mound for the Senators, tossing four innings before
Hank Shultz and
Carlos Vizcaya entered in relief.
Game Two
Fairmont State used a big top of the first, working the count and bringing home nine runs for a comfortable margin before the team had to take the defensive side of the field.
Najay King and Ortega cracked consecutive run-scoring doubles down the left field line in the third inning. Ortega brought home the final run of the nightcap for D&E with a single to left in the fifth, trimming the deficit to 12-3.
Texeira had four innings of relief in place of
McKinley Scott and
Jason Perdue.
