ELKINS, W.Va. – Davis & Elkins women's soccer opened the scoring, but surrendered two goals in the first half in a 2-1 home loss to Frostburg State in the season opener at Nuttall Field on Saturday.
Maria Cabal put the Senators on the board early after a set piece found its way into the back of the net in the fourth minute. The Bobcats responded quickly, knotting the game in the seventh minute with a goal from Alexis Pate.
Audra Curtin netted the game-winner in the 26th minute as Frostburg held on for the 2-1 decision.
Roxanne McFarlin made her first career start in goal for Davis & Elkins and made four saves. The Senators capped the day with a 10-9 margin in shots, while both teams put six attempts on target.
The Senators struggled to get any offense going as the first half came to a close, but opened the second half with several quality looks.
Ella Schmidt rifled one that was smothered by Frostburg keeper Ashley Bilger before
Alexandra Cantarelli rung an attempt off the crossbar.
Lisa Milliken worked free for a shot just under 20 seconds later that was stopped.
That flurry was the best look for the Senators for the equalizer, but
Lourdes Moreno had a chance that glanced off the right post in the 73rd minute.
Each side had one yellow card and a pair of corner kicks.
Davis & Elkins returns to the pitch on Sunday, March 7 for a road meeting with Alderson Broaddus at 2:00 PM.
